To be able to tell if? your second grader is ready to advance to the next grade there are a few things they need to know. There are four basic subjects that your first grader should have a grasp of: Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.? Many parents teach other subjects but these are the basic requirements. During second grade your child will learn a lot the same as in first but in more depth.? Here are 6 basic guidelines for each subject:
Math:
- Ability to add and subtract, use a calculator, and understand word problems with addition and subtraction.
- Know and write basic fractions.
- Understand liquid measurements.
- Able to use a ruler to measure items.
- Write numbers up to 1,000.
- Count by 2?s, 3?s, 4?s, 5?s, and 10?s.
Language Arts:
- ??? Able to read 2nd grade readers fluently.
- ? Have a full grasp of phonics. Long vowels, short vowels, and consonant blends.
- ? Know the beginning, middle, and ending of a story.
- ?10 vocabulary words per week.
- 10 spelling words per week.
- ?Daily journal writing.
- Able to write a story on their own.
Science
- ??? Understand observation.
- Able to use a microscope.
- Identify the three forms of matter.
- Grasp the concept of organisms.
- Understand the plant and animal life cycle.
- ?Understand natural resources.
Social Studies:
- ?Understand what a citizen is.
- ?Understand communities and your role in them.
- Understand and research holidays from around the world.
- Discuss other cultures and how they are different (foods, clothing).
- Know how to read and create a map with a key and a scale.
- Can identify continents on a map.
