Homeschool: What Your 2nd Should Know : Ideas for Women Home ...

To be able to tell if? your second grader is ready to advance to the next grade there are a few things they need to know. There are four basic subjects that your first grader should have a grasp of: Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.? Many parents teach other subjects but these are the basic requirements. During second grade your child will learn a lot the same as in first but in more depth.? Here are 6 basic guidelines for each subject:

Math:

1. Ability to add and subtract, use a calculator, and understand word problems with addition and subtraction.
2. Know and write basic fractions.
3. Understand liquid measurements.
4. Able to use a ruler to measure items.
5. Write numbers up to 1,000.
6. Count by 2?s, 3?s, 4?s, 5?s, and 10?s.

Language Arts:

1. ??? Able to read 2nd grade readers fluently.
2. ? Have a full grasp of phonics. Long vowels, short vowels, and consonant blends.
3. ? Know the beginning, middle, and ending of a story.
4. ?10 vocabulary words per week.
5. 10 spelling words per week.
6. ?Daily journal writing.
7. Able to write a story on their own.

Science

1. ??? Understand observation.
2. Able to use a microscope.
3. Identify the three forms of matter.
4. Grasp the concept of organisms.
5. Understand the plant and animal life cycle.
6. ?Understand natural resources.

Social Studies:

1. ?Understand what a citizen is.
2. ?Understand communities and your role in them.
3. Understand and research holidays from around the world.
4. Discuss other cultures and how they are different (foods, clothing).
5. Know how to read and create a map with a key and a scale.
6. Can identify continents on a map.
