Refinishing Tips for Your Kitchen Cabinets - Catalog Favorites

If you are tired of the way your kitchen looks, but do not have the money or time for a complete kitchen makeover, one of the things that you can do is to refinish your kitchen cabinets. They are one of the first things that start to show signs of aging. Your kitchen cabinets get a lot of wear and tear due to the extreme temperature conditions in your kitchen and excess usage of opening and shutting the doors, moving things around on the shelves, and more.

To give them a new look, you can either paint or stain them. One way to give the doors a whole new look is to paint just the front of the door in a color that coordinates with the rest of the kitchen colors and thoroughly clean the dirt and grime off the rest of the cabinets. If you are going to paint or stain the whole cabinets then the first thing that you need to do is clean the cabinets to get rid of the dirt, grime, and grease from them Once that is done you need to sand the surface so the paint or stain will hold better to the cabinet surface.

The only drawback to this home improvement project is that you will have to clean all the cabinets out, then take them down, and take them to a well ventilated area to refinish them. This would be a great weekend project so you do not have to rush getting them done. After you have them setting in a well ventilated area, start to sand them down with sandpaper.

Before you apply a coat of furniture primer make sure that the surfaces have no dust on them. If there is already paint on the cabinet you will have to make sure that is all off before you can stain them. Make sure that the primer is dried totally before you start the next step.

Match your paint to coordinate with the colors of your walls. To give your kitchen an illusion of being bigger chose a light color. For stains, a lighter stain will also give your kitchen the same illusion.
