Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it's running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you'll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you'll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store -- but we're also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? University of Notre Dame entomologists are part of a team of researchers that recently discovered a potentially dangerous new malaria-transmitting mosquito. The as yet unnamed, and previously unreported, mosquito breeds in the western areas of Kenya and has an unknown DNA match to any of the existing malaria-transmitting species.
The Anopheles species of mosquitoes which transmits malaria in Africa is already widely studied by researchers. It prefers to rest indoors during the day and feed on humans during the night. Current malaria control programs, including spraying of insecticides and using insecticide-treated bed nets, are designed with these behaviors in mind.
Although the new species has never been implicated in the transmission of malaria, new discoveries in its biting habits pose a threat because it was found to be active outdoors and prefers to bite people earlier in the evening, soon after sunset, when people are not protected by current malaria control techniques.
Neil Lobo, a Notre Dame research associate professor and Brandy St. Laurent, a former Notre Dame doctoral student, joined forces on the team of researchers that made the discovery. y Frank Collins, Notre Dame's George and Winifred Clark Professor of Biology, Collins was principal investigator of the Malaria Transmission Consortium effort funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The discovery was announced in a paper whose lead author was Jennifer Stevenson of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

J. Wesson Ashford, MD, Ph.D. A major goal will be to determine whether treatment with leptin reduced the levels of a protein called tau, which is elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of Alzheimer patients. Replacement therapy in leptin continued .High levels of the hormone leptin regulation of energy was associated with low rates of disease in a study published in TheJournal of the American Medical Association.
Leptin has been shown to reduce the levels of B-amyloid, the main constituent of the deposits, or plaques, that occur in the brain of people suffering from Alzheimer?s disease.
If our results are confirmed by others, leptin levels in older adults may serve as one of many possible biomarker for healthy aging and the brain, especially, may open new avenues in order to possible preventive and therapeutic interventions, write the researchers. Leptin replacement therapy
But Seshadri said it remains to be seen whether leptin replacement therapy would benefit humans with Alzheimer?s or help protect against disease.
He said the study reinforces the growing awareness that the health problems associated with procedures such as obesity and resistance increase the risk of dementia in old age.
Tau protein is a key that allows the transport along the fibers of the brain, he tells WebMD. If leptin decreases the levels of tau protein in cerebrospinal fluid, which tells us something is happening. So we only need 45 patients to demonstrate an effect.
Over 12 years of follow-up, those with lower levels of leptin were about four times more likely to develop Alzheimer?s than those with the highest levels.
Ashford is with the Center Stanford / VA Aging Clinical Research, Stanford, California
The treatment with leptin has been shown in studies on animals recent to improve the performance of the memory, even after the onset of Alzheimer?s disease, such as dementia.
Discovered in the mid-1990, leptin is produced by fat cells and is considered critical for the regulation and. But there is evidence suggesting a role more and more of the hormone in brain development and memory.
Higher concentrations at the beginning of leptin were associated with lower rates of dementia years later. This association was observed even after adjusting for the impact of quarantine abdominal or belly fat, which was recently identified as a risk factor for Alzheimer?s disease early.
The study initially included 785 elderly participants in the Framingham Heart Study in progress, which began enrolling patients in 1948.
The National Institutes of Health recently awarded nearly $ 3 million for a small pilot study of leptin replacement therapy in patients with Alzheimer?s disease.
?Our skeleton with its bones, joints and muscle connections serves us so well in our daily lives that we hardly pay attention to this great system,? said Dr. Elazar Zelzer Department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute. ?While previous research has uncovered the mechanisms that contribute to the development and growth of each component of this complex organ and wonderfully adaptable, specific interactions between bones, muscles and tendons that drive the entire musculoskeletal system are not fully understood.
Our study raises a strong possibility that leptin may actually play a role in various pathological processes that cause Alzheimer?s disease clinic, the researcher Sudha Seshadri, MD, of Boston University School of Medicine, tells WebMD. The measurement of levels of leptin
If confirmed, the researchers say the findings could have important implications in the search for effective therapies to prevent and treat disease.

Children ages 2-11 view an alarming amount of television shows that contain forms of social bullying or social aggression. Physical aggression in television for children is greatly documented, but this is the first in-depth analysis on children's exposure to behaviors like cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.
Nicole Martins, Indiana University, and Barbara J. Wilson, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, published in the Journal of Communication a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research. One hundred and fifty television shows were viewed and analyzed, and 92% of the programming contained some version of social aggression?approximately 14 times per hour. There was careful attention to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified, or committed by an attractive perpetrator.
The findings suggested that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers. The study found that attractive characters who perpetrated social aggression were rarely punished for their behavior, and that socially aggressive scenes were significantly more likely than physically aggressive scenes to be presented in a humorous way. In some cases, social aggression on television may pose more of a risk than portrayals of physical aggression do.
"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch. Parents should not assume that a program is okay for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence. Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless antisocial in nature," Martins said.
"Martins and Wilson's research shows just how important it is to broaden our view of 'violence' beyond the physical; particularly as their findings indicate that social violence like insults and name calling occurs just as commonly in children's programming," said Amy Jordan, director of the Media and the Developing Child sector at the University of Pennsylvania and Chair of the Children, Adolescents and the Media Division of the International Communication Association.
"As a society, we need to acknowledge that our children are learning to be socially aggressive, and that one source of this learning may be the television shows they watch. We may not see physical manifestations of this type of violence, but children who are victims of social aggression from their peers may develop deep and lasting emotional scars."

In hindsight, I shouldn?t have complained about the Monday night debacle.
After all, I picked the Seahawks to win by a point and, thanks to the replacement officials, Seattle won by two.? Since MDS picked the Pack, it allowed me to win the weekly contest with MDS by two, 9-7 versus 7-9.
Given the crazy, upside-down games from Week Three, I?ll take a winning record and run with it ? as quickly as the Seahawks ran with their unwarranted win.
For the season, I?m now 27-21, and MDS is 26-22.
This week, we disagree on three games.? All 15 of our picks appear below.
Browns at Ravens
MDS?s take: Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden has actually looked decent the last two weeks, after a disastrous Week One. But the Ravens? defense will bring far too much heat for Weeden to handle. I look for Haloti Ngata to pound Weeden into the turf a few times on Thursday night.
MDS?s pick: Ravens 27, Browns 6.
Florio?s take:? The Browns are another close loss or two away from imploding completely.? They won?t have to worry about another close loss on Thursday night.
Florio?s pick:? Ravens 31, Browns 13.
Panthers at Falcons
MDS?s take: I still don?t believe the Panthers are as bad as they?ve looked this season, and that by the end of the year they could be fighting for a playoff spot. But Atlanta is the wrong place for the Panthers to try to get back on track.
MDS?s pick: Falcons 23, Panthers 17.
Florio?s take:? The Falcons have beaten the Panthers four straight times, scoring 31 points exactly in each game.? Atlanta could be on track to clinching the division by Thanksgiving.
Florio?s pick:? Falcons 31, Panthers 14.
Patriots at Bills
MDS?s take: This is a fascinating game in the AFC East race, one that could establish the Bills as the favorites to win the division. I?ve been saying all year that the Bills have made the right moves to become playoff contenders this season, but I just think the Patriots, with their backs against the wall, are going to come out focused and ready to play their best game of the season.
MDS?s pick: Patriots 24, Bills 14.
Florio?s take:? The Bills have beaten the Pats only once since the last time the Pats had a losing record.? Buffalo is moving in the right direction, but New England needs this one badly.
Florio?s pick:? Patriots 30, Bills 23.
Vikings at Lions
MDS?s take: Another fascinating divisional game, as the Vikings have a real opportunity here to establish themselves as surprising contenders in the NFC North. However, I see far too many matchup advantages for the Lions? receivers against the Vikings? secondary.? Not just Calvin Johnson (who has a matchup advantage over every defensive back in the league) but also receivers Nate Burleson and Titus Young and tight end Brandon Pettigrew should be able to get open and get points on the board in Detroit.
MDS?s pick: Lions 28, Vikings 24.
Florio?s take:? The Lions have won three straight in the series, but the Vikings are gaining confidence,? The Lions continue to be more flawed than anyone realized.? Receiver Jerome Simpson returns from suspension in time to help the Vikings take advantage of Detroit?s biggest weakness.
Florio?s pick:? Vikings 24, Lions 16.
Titans at Texans
MDS?s take: The Texans are the best team in the AFC South by such a large margin that the question for me isn?t whether they?ll win the division but how quickly they?ll clinch. My guess is some time around Week 11. This win will be another step toward that.
MDS?s pick: Texans 34, Titans 10.
Florio?s take:? Yeah, I picked the Titans to win the division.? And if they upset the Texans on Sunday, the Titans will thrust themselves into the conversation.? And if they upset the Texans, it will mean that I picked this specific game incorrectly.? Despite last weekend?s epic in Nashville, the Titans aren?t nearly as good as I thought they?d be.? The Texans are much better than I thought they?d be.
Florio?s pick:? Texans 24, Titans 13.
Chargers at Chiefs
MDS?s take: The Chiefs looked pretty good against the Saints on Sunday, and the Chargers looked pretty bad against the Falcons on Sunday. But I?m expecting the Chargers to win, in a game that I have a hunch will come down to special teams, where the Chargers will make plays and the Chiefs will make mistakes.
MDS?s pick: Chargers 28, Chiefs 21.
Florio?s take:? One week often changes everything.? Last Sunday, the Chargers went from elite to ?meh? status, and the Chiefs showed they?ve got some fight.? Home team gets the edge in this one, especially if Jamaal Charles saved some yards for Sunday.
Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 24, Chargers 22.
49ers at Jets
MDS?s take: If not for the injury to Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, I?d be very tempted to pick the 49ers to lose their second straight road game. But that Revis injury is devastating to the Jets not only because it radically changes what they can do on defense, but also because while seeing players and coaches on the Jets talking this week, you could practically feel the entire locker room deflating at the loss of their best player. I think the Jets are going to come out looking very bad on Sunday.
MDS?s pick: 49ers 27, Jets 14.
Florio?s take:? The difference between the 49ers defense and the Jets defense is that the 49ers didn?t put all their eggs in one island.
Florio?s pick:? 49ers 20, Jets 13.
Seahawks at Rams
MDS?s take: The Seahawks don?t have any time to send thank-you notes to the league office for their gift on Monday night, because they?ve got a road trip to St. Louis on a short work week. I like the way Jeff Fisher?s defense is playing, and I think Russell Wilson will feel a lot of pressure, but Seattle?s defensive line will have Sam Bradford under pressure, and the Seahawks will win a low-scoring game.
MDS?s pick: Seahawks 10, Rams 9.
Florio?s take:? Short week, significant travel, improving opponent, and guilty conscience add up to trouble for the Seahawks in St. Louis.
Florio?s pick:? Rams 14, Seahawks 12.
Dolphins at Cardinals
MDS?s take: It?s taken me a while to learn to believe in the Cardinals, but I?m there now. Which probably means they?re going to lose. But I?m picking them anyway.
MDS?s pick: Cardinals 24, Dolphins 7.
Florio?s take:? This has the potential to be one of those early-season ?correction? games.? But how can the Dolphins win if they can?t score any offensive touchdowns against once of the best defenses in the league?
Florio?s pick:? Cardinals 17, Dolphins 6.
Bengals at Jaguars
MDS?s take: I loved the game Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden called on Sunday against the Redskins. Look for Bengals receiver A.J. Green to have another big day against the Jaguars.
MDS?s pick: Bengals 28, Jaguars 24.
Florio?s take:? It would be fitting for the Bengals, a week after finally winning a game they were supposed to lose, to lose a game they?re supposed to win.? But the Bengals are better than the Jaguars on both sides of the ball ? and the Jaguars will have a hard time keeping up with a suddenly dynamic and diverse offense.
Florio?s pick:? Bengals 24, Jaguars 14.
Raiders at Broncos
MDS?s take: It says something about what we?ve come to expect from Peyton Manning that he had 330 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers on Sunday against a very good Texans defense, and yet everyone is talking about how he?s just not the same. Playing a weak Raiders defense will result in Manning looking a lot better, and the Broncos improving to 2-2.
MDS?s pick: Broncos 35, Raiders 14.
Florio?s take:? Peyton Manning won?t need much arm strength to move the ball against a defense that can?t do much to stop him.? Or anyone.
Florio?s pick:? Broncos 27, Raiders 17.
Saints at Packers
MDS?s take: Raise your hand if you predicted these two teams would be a combined 1-5 heading into this game. I see the Packers? problems as much more correctable than the Saints? problems, and I see Aaron Rodgers having a big day against a shaky Saints defense.
MDS?s pick: Packers 27, Saints 17.
Florio?s take:? The Saints can thank the Seahawks and the replacement officials for what they?re about to endure.
Florio?s pick:? Packers 45, Saints 17.
Redskins at Buccaneers
MDS?s take: The Bucs have a bad offense and a good defense; the Redskins have a good offense and a bad defense. I like Tampa Bay?s defense to keep it close and the Redskins? defense to give up a big play at the wrong time.
MDS?s pick: Buccaneers 14, Redskins 10.
Florio?s take:? That win over the Saints in New Orleans is looking less impressive by the week.? And the Bucs are better than their record would suggest.
Florio?s pick:? Buccaneers 20, Redskins 16.
Giants at Eagles
MDS?s take: The Eagles need to bounce back in a big way after laying an egg against the Cardinals. I think they?re going to, with Michael Vick finally making it through a game without a turnover.
MDS?s pick: Eagles 24, Giants 21.
Florio?s take:? Eagles coach Andy Reid does his best work when his back is against the wall.? And his back is already against the wall.? And he said just enough this week to put his quarterback?s back against the wall, too.
Florio?s pick:? Eagles 27, Giants 24.
Bears at Cowboys
MDS?s take: As impressive as the Bears? defense has been, I think they?ll struggle with the explosiveness of Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray, who should have a huge game in a Dallas win.
MDS?s pick: Cowboys 34, Bears 20.
Florio?s take:? If the Cowboys can keep Tony Romo in two or fewer pieces (factoring in the possibility of the partial loss of an ear), the Cowboys should win this one.
Florio?s pick:? Cowboys 26, Bears 17.

Here's how the pennant races look with exactly one week to go:
? TIGERS ROAR: The AL Central has a new leader, with Detroit moving past Chicago for the first time since July 23. Andy Dirks' hard slide to break up a double play sent the Tigers past Kansas City 5-4. The White Sox have dropped seven of eight, and fell one game back with a 6-4 loss to Cleveland.
? POOL PLAY: Tampa Bay has won seven straight, and hasn't lost since manager Joe Maddon challenged them to run the table like pool hustler Minnesota Fats. The Rays are three games out in the AL wild-card race.
? FLYING HIGH: The Angels have won five in row and now trail by just two games in the AL wild-card chase.
? GOING, GOING ... GONE?: The Phillies' playoff run is almost over. After winning the NL East crown the past five years, Philadelphia was pushed to the brink of elimination with an 8-4 loss to new division champion Washington.
? NEXT UP: The streaking Rays visit the slumping White Sox. James Shields (15-9) starts for Tampa Bay vs. Jake Peavy (11-12).
? CHASE CHATTER: "It just feels good to get a win. That's all that really matters. Right now we have to win out to at least give us a chance to make the playoffs. We can't worry who's in front of us." ? Matt Kemp after homering and driving in four runs to help the Dodgers gain ground on St. Louis for the last NL wild-card spot.

iPhones used to come with Google Maps, but Apple booted Google after the two companies were unable to negotiate a new deal.
The whole thing fell apart over turn-by-turn directions.
The problem for Apple is, everyone (well, almost everyone) hates their maps app.
It's bad at directions, and some of the satellite photos are so distorted they make cities look like they were attacked by the Cloverfield monster.
Given all this, it is pretty funny that, when you take a closer look at the icon Apple has made for its iPhone maps app, you realize that the directions in the app make no sense. They are actually wildly dangerous.
Entrepreneur?Nik Cubrilovic noticed this, and made an awesome illustration pointing it out:
Techmeme editor Gabe Rivera made this map, showing what the direction should actually look like:

Actress Anne Hathaway films a scene for "The Devil Wears Prada," which depicts the woes of working as an underling in the fashion world.
By Amanda Chatel, LearnVest
People have a lot of opinions about money.?In LearnVest's ?Money Mic? series, we hand over the podium to someone with a strong opinion on a financial topic. These are their views, not ours, but we welcome the opportunity to spark a constructive conversation about money.?
Today, one woman opens up about why she walked out on a job she hated ? even though she didn?t have a Plan B.
Whether you?re a money maven or still learning the ropes, we share these stories to let you know you?re not alone. This is just one person?s story; for LearnVest-approved advice on what we recommend you do in a situation like this, check out our note in the end.
I?ve walked out on one job in my life.
I had been in New York City for just over a year when I saw a Craigslist ad for an office manager/executive assistant for a fashion designer management agency in SoHo. I immediately jumped at the opportunity to work in fashion.
Although the book version of ?The Devil Wears Prada??was already out, I had not read it, and the movie adaptation was still a year away.
Believe it or not, I had zero idea about the stereotypical catty world for which I was about to sign up. When they offered me the position, I gave my current job notice, dusted off my one pair of Jimmy Choo pumps and prepared to take my place in the world of fashion.
I had been making $28,000 at the previous job, and although the new one only paid $2,000 more, it was still more, and the work, I figured, would be far more exciting.
The good, the bad and the fashionable
Admittedly, working in fashion had its perks. I got free shoes and an occasional lunch at Balthazar, a trendy French brasserie downtown. But I also had to deal with incessant screaming phone calls from designers, and the sting of everyone from industry insiders to my own boss questioning my intelligence (he would call me ?clearly brainless?).
Making matters worse, I was not psychic.
I was supposed to somehow know my boss never flew American Airlines, never used condiments and had not one, but three phones ? when he had never actually given me any of this information. I learned the hard way when I booked his trip to L.A. on American, got his turkey sandwich with mustard and gave out the wrong number to his BlackBerry. Each screw-up resulted in being pulled aside and reamed out for not figuring it all out on my own. I began to doubt myself: Maybe I?was?the idiot he claimed.

I won?t even get into the female agent who often opened her drawer of enemas and offered me a few to help with my weight problem. I don?t think I have a weight problem.
It was an emotional year, to say the least.
Then things got even worse: My breaking point
Just before Fashion Week in September, things got even worse. The once passive-aggressive ridiculing by my boss had started to take place in the main office, rather than in private. It was as though he got off on berating me out in the open, for everyone ? even designers I had followed for years in Vogue ? to see.
Every tiny mistake led to him asking if I was deliberately trying to get fired. When I asked for a raise because I was working 10-11 hours a day and was almost always at his beck and call, he literally laughed in my face. I countered that I was making $30,000 and putting up with emotional and mental distress on a daily basis. He suggested I get a therapist like the rest of New York; I politely said I couldn?t afford one.
Halfway through Fashion Week, one of my favorite designers came by the office. That same day, my boss was scheduled to fly to Miami, but his flight, as well as every other one, was canceled due to a hurricane.?There was nothing I could do about a natural disaster. But to him, of course, it meant I didn?t try hard enough.
When I broke the news, he launched into a tirade of insults. I watched the interns cower, the other agent roll her eyes and I did everything within my power not to cry. (After I saw ?The Devil Wears Prada,? I started to wonder if he was taking tips from it.)
The designer, whom I had long admired, stared in horror and shot me a sympathetic glance. Other than that, no one said a word. I walked back to my desk and told my intern I was going for a walk. As I said it, I had already decided to never step foot in that office again.
As I walked toward the elevator choking back tears, my boss told me to pick him up a Starbucks coffee while I was out. I nodded silently and left.
What happened after I walked out
I went to Starbucks, got myself an iced Americano and proceeded to walk up Broadway to the Flatiron building. I sat down and watched the tourists, thinking about how I would tell my parents what I had done. Even before quitting, I was living paycheck to paycheck. My savings were somewhere around $600.
But in that moment, money wasn?t my greatest concern. I had been so belittled, all I could do was sit there, feel the wooden slats of the bench under me and allow myself to feel freedom instead of fear.

Finally, I got up and headed back to my apartment. On the way home, I received a call from the owner of the company who apologized (very weakly, if we?re to be honest) for my boss? behavior. He also said I never had a thick enough skin for the job, but he appreciated my hard work and would give me one week?s severance. Not much, but it was something.
I was in no position to haggle. If anything, I was grateful.
My new lease on life
After drowning my sorrows in wine that first night, I started my job search with fervor. I also cut costs: no more eating out, no more bars and no more shopping until I got a job.
I didn?t want to tell my parents I had walked out until I had something else lined up. I was hoping we could have a good laugh about it, eventually. I have always found jobs on Craigslist, and once again started my search there. This was before the recession so finding a job wasn?t as difficult as it would be now; after only four interviews, I was offered a job just in time to pay October?s rent.
The job that came next was at a guerrilla marketing company. I was hired to be the office manager, and it was a job I had for over two years before I was eventually let go, along with almost everyone else, because of the recession. Unlike my job in fashion, the marketing company was full of great co-workers, an absent boss (which is always great) and an environment that nurtured our artistic pursuits outside of work.
I made amazing friends, met one of the great loves of my life and learned to have faith in myself again ? a difficult task considering the office from which I came. I started a blog based on my office manager experiences, and eventually found the necessary self-esteem to pursue writing as a full-time career after I was laid off with a very generous eight-weeks? severance.
On a good day, I can say things happen for a reason. On a bad day, I don?t know why or how things happen.
While I can say now that having walked out on that fashion job was one of the wisest choices I ever made, I?m not sure I?d be able to say the same thing had the outcome gone in a completely different direction. However, instead of getting into ?what if,? I?ll just say having had that job and then leaving it are two important parts of my life.
It also makes for a great story, and as a writer, that?s always a good thing.

If you?re in this situation?
Burnout is real. We get how emotionally taxing it can be to work at a job you hate.?If you?re in a similar boat, we urge you to think about a backup plan before making the leap. ?It?s best to have another job lined up,??says LearnVest CFP Sophia Bera, ?but sometimes you just don?t. If you have a significant other or parents who can support you for the next few months, it?s much easier to quit abruptly. Also, you have got to hustle! Put all your energy into expanding your network and set up as many information interviews as possible.?
In meantime, explore ways to make extra cash. ?Post an ad on Craigslist or?elance.com?so you can get freelance work,? Bera suggests. ?Also, don?t overlook the possibility of serving, bartending or delivering pizzas. These jobs don?t involve working full-time during the day, so you still have plenty of time to look for work.? Of course, many people don?t have family to lean on: That?s why?LearnVest always recommends your first financial priority be saving up an emergency fund so you don?t risk going into deep credit card debt, or being unable to pay your bills, should disaster strike.

ASUS Sweden has taken to Facebook and let everyone know that users of the Transformer Prime in Sweden should be seeing an OTA update to Jelly Bean available. While there is no word on other areas, this is a good sign that ASUS is prepared to roll the update out en masse shortly. My own source "close to the matter" says we should see it in the U.S. in early October should everything go well in Sweden.
Along with the obvious perks of Jelly Bean, ASUS wants to remind everyone that they will be losing Adobe Flash official support, and that the Jelly Bean update will remove Wifi-Direct from the Prime. On that note, they also say no users will be forced to accept this update.
If you're rooted and ROM'ed, ignore all this and be ready for better custom work from your favorite developer. If you're not, you can check for the update from the device settings -- let us know if you see it!

Clearwire doesn't have much time left before its promised LTE rollout goes live in early 2013, so it's with some relief that we know the deployment is getting underway. CFO Hope Cochran told those at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia Conference this week that construction of the first cell sites starts this month, with efforts truly swinging into full gear during the fall. The executive also reminded us of a very pragmatic reason why many of the 5,000 LTE sites due by June 30th will target high-traffic areas -- as Clearwire is only selling the faster data access to other providers, it should pocket more money in any regions where Sprint needs all the help it can get. Call it a virtuous cycle. Cochran certainly does: while Clearwire is free to make deals with others, Cochran says her company weighs any alliances against what it still considers a very special pact with Sprint. No doubt the 4G pioneer is hoping that it's making the right choices, as other carriers aren't waiting around.

Following a consultation earlier this year, the UK deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, announced that the government will adopt a new definition of domestic violence with effect from next March.
This new definition will include ?any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members?. It will extend not only to physical or sexual abuse but to financial, psychological and emotional abuse, too. The Home Office announcement explains that controlling behaviour includes acts ?designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent? by, among other things, ?exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain? or ?regulating their everyday behaviour?.
This refined definition has been welcomed, particularly for its inclusion of ?coercive control?, by both police and groups working with victims of domestic violence. The only criticism so far has been that the definition doesn?t go far enough. To general nods of agreement, the Home Office has suggested that the new definition will help victims to come forward and ask for help, as well as ensuring that cases of domestic violence are treated consistently by different governmental agencies.
True, these proposals do no more than bring the Home Office definition into line with other influential definitions of domestic violence. A striking example is the case of Mrs Yemshaw, who back in 2008 asked Hounslow Council in London to re-house her on the grounds of her husband?s violence. Hounslow declined, on the basis that her husband had never actually hit her, nor even threatened to. But when Mrs Yemshaw?s case ended up in the Supreme Court last year, the law lords held that domestic violence includes ?threatening or intimidating behaviour and any other form of abuse which, directly or indirectly, may give rise to the risk of harm?, including psychological, financial or emotional abuse and harm. Mrs Yemshaw?s case was remitted to Hounslow Council for it to reconsider.
It is hard not to feel heartened when an unhappy wife is given her own haven, and no doubt some people support the new definition with similar sentiment. But there are many dangers in the law adopting a definition of domestic violence that does not even centre on, let alone restrict itself to, physical acts.
article continues after advertisement
The most direct danger is to those individuals ? mainly men ? who will be branded as domestic-violence perpetrators. Even leaving to one side the stigma, not to mention the real risk of prosecution, the label domestic violence is the gateway to a nebulous bundle of coercive state powers. A sobering example is the Domestic Violence Protection Notice, currently being piloted. Under this scheme, if a police officer reasonably believes that a man has used or threatened violence towards his partner and that his partner needs protection from him, then the police officer has the power to order him to leave his home and also his neighbourhood, even against his partner?s wishes. So when the police are called - perhaps by a neighbour - to defuse a heated family row, this can lead to eviction and forced family separation, even though the couple raised only their voices, not their fists.
Just as insidious is the deeply unpleasant depiction of human relations in the definition. An expansive definition of domestic violence means that violent relationships are no longer the exception. Instead, we are encouraged to look for danger in our most intimate relationships and to be suspicious of our loved ones? normal behaviour. The Home Office message is: ?Okay, so he?s never hit you, but has he ever made you feel bad about yourself?? But which reader is unable to catalogue a list of your partner?s controlling behaviour, emotional abuse, acts designed to make you dependent, or attempts to exploit your resources for personal gain? Such a list includes: any disparaging remarks about your appearance; being yelled at; attempts to curtail your social engagements; being encouraged to cut back on your working hours; or being told to spend your hard-earned salary on Sky Sports. Perhaps the hardest to avoid in any close relationship is regulation of your partner?s everyday behaviour ? which reminds me, I need to check mine has emptied the dishwasher.
Traditional gender-stereotyped relationships are particularly likely to be labelled violent. What could be better ?designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent? than becoming a housewife, who will definitely have her resources and capacities exploited for the breadwinner?s personal gain? But even outside the traditional nuclear family, isn?t the very essence of an intimate relationship a series of acts designed to make you increasingly dependent on your partner? Small wonder that current domestic violence research finds a high prevalence of domestic-violence victims ? the wonder is that research finds anyone who isn?t. And this is, of course, another danger: that all women are encouraged to see themselves as sufferers. Indeed, one of the explicit reasons given by the Home Office for the new wider definition is that as things stand, domestic violence victims who haven?t suffered any physical violence may not realise that they are victims.
Not every relationship is a rose garden; clearly, people are sometimes very nasty to each other. And there is a difference between the woman in a stormy relationship and the woman who is downtrodden. But there is also a world of difference between the woman who is belittled and the woman who is beaten up, and the law does neither any favours by conflating them.

New Delhi - A moving film about love between a deaf-mute boy and an autistic girl was selected as India's entry for best foreign film category for the 2013 Academy Awards, media reports said Sunday.
Directed by Anurag Basu, Barfi, beat 19 other films to be named India's choice for the Oscars, broadcaster NDTV reported, citing the Film Federation of India (FFI).
The romantic comedy was released in India on September 14 to rave reviews and packed cinemas.
Barfi has been lauded in local film circles for its simple but powerful narrative. It has appealed to audiences with an appetite for potboilers, local media reported.
Critics have praised performances by Ranbir Kapoor who played the lead role of Murphy alias Barfi and actress Priyanka Chopra.
The Indian film industry churns out hundreds of films every year but has yet to win an Academy Award. So far, only three Indian films, including Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988) and Lagaan (2001) have been shortlisted for the award. - Sapa-dpa
